This liquid barrier causes corrosion and weakening of the material due to the buildup of electrostatic forces. In some cases, this corrosion can progress so far that large chunks of concrete may fall off. However, if you keep your pool clean and do not allow excess rain or snowmelt into its basin, most pools will only cause cosmetic damage at worst.
